Job Opening - Community Developer

Posted: 8/4/22  Anticipated Decision Date: 9/1/22

Tech Valley Center of Gravity (TVCOG), the Capital Region’s premiere Makerspace, is looking for a part-time Community Developer.

TVCOG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Makerspace, manufacturing incubator, STEAM education center, and creative community located in the heart of downtown Troy, NY. We provide affordable access to workspace, manufacturing equipment, and training focused on practical skills and hands-on experience. Membership is open to startups and hobbyists alike. The only requirement is a passion to create!

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

A successful Community Developer will use their skills in marketing and communications to bring our story to a wider audience, and to strengthen the connections between the existing members of our community. Becase we have a small staff, the ideal applicant will be an enthusiastic team player who works well with others and is willing to occasionally assist other staff with duties outside their own department.

  • New Membership Development Tasks
    • Generate and manage content (images, videos, graphics, and text) for use on website, social media, newsletter, and printed materials.
    • Write longer form content (such as interviews, testimonials, and case studies) to showcase the possibilities TVCOG membership provides to individuals and businesses.
    • Be the first point of contact for phone calls, general inbox emails, and walk-ins, answering questions as best as possible or making referrals to the appropriate staff member.
    • Work with TVCOG staff and volunteers to develop and manage a marketing strategy.
  • Community Support Tasks
    • Become highly familiar with members and their work. Actively work to make connections between members to assist in their development.
    • Develop methods and events to connect members and encourage a socially active community.
    • Assist in administrative tasks, such as making account changes for members and setting up event registration pages.
    • Provide customer support - update payment information, upgrade or cancel memberships, assist with class registration, etc.

Desired Characteristics and Qualifications

This is a professional level position suited to someone with 1-3 years of experience in marketing and/or public relations and/or nonprofit arts administration. We are committed to maintaining a positive and equitable working environment; as such, we encourage applicants of all backgrounds and education levels with relevant skills and experience to apply.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of Makerspaces and their roles in the community.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and interpersonal.
  • Ability to switch between various different tasks depending on immediate member needs.
  • Experience with current social media platforms (we currently use Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, but would like to expand to others).
  • Experience with Google business suite (Gmail, Docs, Drive, etc)
  • Experience with a customer database (we use CiviCRM, but experience with any CRM will be helpful).
  • Prior experience in marketing, communications, graphic design, or sales. Experience with Canva or Adobe Suite products is a plus.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. TVCOG is a wheelchair accessible space.
  • For the safety of all who visit TVCOG, a COVID-19 vaccination will be required as a condition of employment.

Compensation, Schedule & Benefits

This is a 20 hour per week, part-time position, paying $19 per hour. Benefits include paid holidays, paid time off, and comped Makerspace membership. While this is primarily an in-person position, some tasks may be able to be completed remotely as needed. Our advertised staffed office hours are 11am-5pm Monday to Friday, and we anticipate the Community Developer’s main working hours to be within that time frame, but the actual schedule is flexible and will vary based on staff availability, events, and other organizational needs.
